Atlanta Bicycle Accidents

According to The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), more than 51,000 bicyclists have died in traffic crashes in the United States. The NHTSA further reports there were 630 cyclist deaths in 2009, and these accounted for 2 percent of all traffic fatalities. The 27 children age 14 and younger who were killed in traffic crashes in 2009 were pedestrians or cyclists who were struck by drunk drivers

Bicyclists are vulnerable to severe injury and death when they are involved in Atlanta bicycle accidents. A bicycle affords no protective envelope for its rider the way that a larger vehicle does. In a crash, a bicyclist hurtles into the air and is likely to suffer a severe injury. The NHTSA reports that despite the fact that nearly 70 percent of all fatal bicycle accidents involve head injuries, only 20 to 25 percent of bicyclists wear a helmet. Other drivers, especially at night, may not see a bicyclist and can easily run a bike off the road without ever realizing it was there.

Some things that you can do to avoid becoming the victim of a bicycle accident include the following bicycle safety measures:

  • Abide by the laws. Bicycles are vehicles and are required to follow applicable laws. Always come to a complete stop at traffic lights and stop signs.
  • Wear your helmet. No matter your age, wear a helmet. Be sure it is fitted properly. A helmet gives you the best protection in an accident. Encourage children from a young age to wear a helmet.
  • Enhance your visibility. Wear bright clothing and reflective stripes. Place reflectors in front and on back of your bike. Use lights on your bike when you are driving in dimly lit places.
  • Ride with traffic and be defensive. Bicycles are vehicles and should act as such. Ride as though you are a car and maintain a consistent path forward. Signal turns and stops. Stay alert and never assume that another vehicle sees you.
